Halloween painting so far

Here is another painting which came along with the skull sketches. Talk about complimentary colors!

I had my friend Iva pose for this one. It started out as a vampire drawing and sort of evolved into this raging medusa-like creature? Don't know if that's a good thing or not. Again, really bright colors, which I love but do not normally use.

More to come.

friday night

I let this go for a week or two, so here is a few things that I have been working on.

I painted this last week while working at the South Street Body Graphics with Mony... it was pretty dead so I found a skull cast and did some acrylic sketch/studies to pass the time. I got my one and only issue of Tattoo Artist magazine, reading up on Jeff Gogue and admiring the way he paints skulls. He uses oil mostly, so acrylic was the next best (and portable) thing. I did one with mostly blue and another with pink and green. I'm not sure why I all of a sudden have an urge to use complimentary colors, but I'm diggin the freedom of painting that I missed! It was very theraputic. I feel like I have lost that freedom and need to get it back. I need to work on SLOWING DOWN and not wanting to finish so quickly. It's weird how everyone makes comments about my ability to work so fast, but when I am painting, I get so lost in what I am doing that before I know it, I am "done". Looking at these now, they are far from finished, but figured that I would just leave them as sketches and move onto more.

Need to upload another one to this, will post again very soon.

Did you ever wonder where the phrase "something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue" that became a wedding custom come from?

Well, so did we! So we did some research on it, and it turns out it has its roots in a poem from England.

The complete poem is:

Something old, something new
Something borrowed, something blue
And a silver sixpence in her shoe.

This is what we found out:

A sixpence is a coin that was minted in Britain from 1551 to 1967. It was made of silver and worth six pennies. So this wedding tradition is definitely English, and many sources say that it began in the Victorian era.

Each item in this poem represents a good-luck token for the bride. If she carries all of them on her wedding day, her marriage will be happy. "Something old" symbolizes continuity with the bride's family and the past. "Something new" means optimism and hope for the bride's new life ahead. "Something borrowed" is usually an item from a happily married friend or family member, whose good fortune in marriage is supposed to carry over to the new bride. The borrowed item also reminds the bride that she can depend on her friends and family.

A silver sixpence in the bride's shoe represents wealth and financial security. It may date back to a Scottish custom of a groom putting a silver coin under his foot for good luck. For optimum fortune, the sixpence should be in the left shoe. These days, a dime or a copper penny is sometimes substituted, and many companies sell keepsake sixpences for weddings.

And...
Blue has been connected to weddings for centuries. In ancient Rome, brides wore blue to symbolize love, modesty, and fidelity. Christianity has long dressed the Virgin Mary in blue, so purity was associated with the color. Before the late 19th century, blue was a popular color for wedding gowns, as evidenced in proverbs like, "Marry in blue, lover be true."

So today, we focus on couture bridal gowns in blue!

Fall Weding Decorations Ideas

Decorating for a fall wedding can be an interesting challenge. It takes creativity to be able to come up with a perfect fall wedding. Fall weddings are considered one of the more romantic times to hold a wedding. There is something about the fall weather, fallen leaves, the beautiful colors and the overall atmosphere that gives weight to the idea that fall weddings are most romantic.

Fall wedding decorations are also relatively easy to come up with. The colors of the fall season are inspiration enough from the yellows to the browns and to the reds. Fall wedding decorations also can borrow from nature elements to lend a rustic and homely feel to the wedding.

There are many different things a couple can do for their fall wedding. If the wedding is held in early fall when the weather is a perfect, not too warm or too cold, then they can hold the wedding outdoors. An outdoor wedding would be great against the backdrop of the glorious colors of fall. Imagine the fallen leaves, the vibrant colors on the trees. An ideal location for an outdoor wedding would be a local farm, orchard or even a botanical garden.

However, if an outdoor wedding is not your cup of tea, or if you are holding your fall wedding little later in the season, then an indoor wedding would be great. For an indoor fall wedding, one would have to bring nature indoors - by incorporating fall colors into the table decor from the flowers to the table centerpieces.

When it comes to decorations for a fall wedding, flowers are still best to have in the walkway. For fall wedding decorations, daisies, sweet williams, chrysanthemums and colorful mums are some of the best flowers to use. Wedding reception decorations in the fall theme can adorn the entrance to the reception area and can have an arc made of dried leaves, dry grasses and haystack. The whole area can be donned with lamps and lights wrapped in colorful papers or cloths. A fall wedding can have a color scheme of orange, red and yellow.

A good match for the fall wedding decorations would be an off-white or cream-colored gown for the bridesmaids (see below for picture suggestions). For a more traditional touch of fall wedding, the entourage can have an orange motif. If the couple wants a more modern approach to the season, light blue motif would be a fine choice. The weather during fall season can be a bit unpredictable. To be on the safe side, it would be best if bridesmaids would wear thin-strapped, or maybe strapless, gowns with matching shawls or wraps. If the usual cold front will not be felt during the wedding ceremony, the ladies can just take off their wraps and be comfortable and cool enough with their gowns.

Couture Bridal Gowns | Meaning of Couture

What Does Couture Mean?

A lot of people throw around the word "couture" withour really understanding what it means. Couture is simply high fashion designing and dressmaking. This goes back in time to the mid-1800s in Europe, where couture garments were specially made (tailored) for the customer. Couture garments are designed to look absolutely stunning on clients, with fits customized to the client's body, way of movement, and personal style. The detailing on couture garments such as beading and embroidery is always done by hand, representing hours and sometimes months of labor.

Today, couture garments also require customization and fittings.

With ready-made bridal gowns to choose over couture bridal gowns, and at lesser price tags too, why would a bride opt for couture bridal gowns?

Take some time to read this expert article (see below) on why there are still many brides out there who opt for couture bridal gowns.

Why Choose a Custom Or Couture Wedding Gown?
By Laura Firenze

There are thousands of wedding gowns from which a bride can choose, so many in fact that it can seem absolutely overwhelming. With so many choices available, does it really make sense to consider having your wedding gown custom made? The answer is yes, and it is not only the rich and famous who order one-of-a-kind wedding dresses. These are some of the reasons why you might want to choose a custom or couture bridal gown.

First of all, there is something that needs to be cleared up, and that is the true meaning of the word couture. The term has been misappropriated and misused to the point where many women have lost sight of what it even means. When you see an off-the-rack mass-manufacturer of wedding dresses calling themselves "Such and such Couture Bridal", you should be aware that they are trying to make themselves into something they are not. Couture is always a unique garment that is carefully handmade for one specific person, and made using only the finest materials and techniques. Haute couture refers properly only to a group of specially designated French designers, although it is reasonable enough for an American designer handcrafting top quality custom wedding gowns to refer to them as couture as well.

The reasons to order a custom or couture gown are as varied as the women who do so. You may be surprised to hear that one of the most common reasons is for fit. If a bride has a difficult figure or is simply two different sizes on the top and bottom, she may actually find it less expensive to have her gown custom made by a talented seamstress than to order a wedding gown that needs drastic alterations or pattern changes.

To make a distinction, true haute couture bridal gowns run into the six figures, but a well made custom wedding dress from a local designer can run you much, much less. It depends on where you live and who you are hiring, but for a top quality custom gown, expect it to start at a bit more than a comparable gown from a good designer. (Of course keep in mind that you will not have the alteration charges for a custom made dress that you would for one you order.) Handmade gowns will naturally be in a completely different price range than the mass-produced dresses, but that is really apples to oranges.

Certainly one of the other primary reasons to order a custom gown for your wedding is style. This can be as simple as liking the bodice from one dress and the skirt from another and asking your seamstress to make one gown combining the two designs. In other cases, a bride may have a desire for something that is offbeat that she would never find in a readymade bridal gown. Having your gown custom made just for you allows you all sorts of options such as unique materials, interesting colors, or an unusual cut or silhouette.

If you do opt for a handcrafted gown, be sure to pay equal attention to your accessories. The wrong ones can detract from the special wedding dress that you invested so much of yourself into creating. Timeless pieces like bridal jewelry sets with a cultured pearl bracelet, necklace, and pair of earrings are one lovely idea. Brides who like to mix the classic with the contemporary can layer and stack some bold and fun crystal bracelets in with the cultured pearl bridal bracelet.

Custom made wedding dresses have many advantages over those that are already designed. If you are looking for a unique gown that fits your vision of a dream bridal gown and fits you to a tee, you will be happiest with a gown that is made especially for you. The most important reason to choose a custom or couture wedding gown is that it will be a true original, just like the bride who wears it.

Laura is interested in wedding planning and wedding trends including jewelry, receptions and gifts. Cultured pearl bridal bracelets are always elegant and tasteful.

Fall Wedding Favors Ideas

We at Couture Bridal Designs believe that fall weddings are some of the most gorgeous weddings since there are so many deep, rich colors to choose from. If you have already selected a color theme, then the easiest way to select your fall wedding favors would be to stay in the same color family as your wedding color.

For example, if your color is warm red, then beautiful reddish tinged wedding favor boxes filled with chocolate kisses is a fun way to thank your guests. Or if your color is burgundy, then burgundy photo frame/coaster favors would look fantastic on your table. These are just some of the ideas you can incorporate for your fall wedding to make it an elegant affair to remember.

Fall Wedding Favors For Autumn Colors
By Lindy Smart

So you are planning a fall wedding. Your ceremony is a huge project to take on and every detail to your wedding must be perfect. You want to remember your wedding and your wedding reception for the rest of your life as one of the happiest memories you have ever had. If you want an elegant reception to a simple yet uniformed reception you must remember the fall wedding favors.

Decorate with fall tea lights to add ambiance to your wedding reception. You can light them for the ambiance or leave them and use them for the name tag holders of your guests. Either way it is pure elegance.

Gorgeous frosted fall leaf coasters are a wonderful fall wedding favor to give your guests. Every time they use your glass coaster they will be reminded of the lovely wedding and time they had at your reception.

Another fall leaf design is the maple leaf on a coaster. The maple leaf is articulately done on a cork coaster. Stamped to perfection.

You can even order a favor of a coaster that lets your guest put their own photograph inside. They may end up putting one of your wedding photos as bride and groom in the coaster for memories. Or maybe a picture of themselves with the new couple.

Fall colored leaf soap pedals are simply gorgeous in the autumn colors of green, yellow and burgundy. You can almost see the leaves outside change their glorious colors now.

A small guest photo album is just the thing for your guests to take home with them as a wedding favor. The photo album has dainty pressed leaves right on the album cover. Your guests can put some of their favorite photos and or reception party photos in their album.

Just about everyone loves a candle. As a fall wedding favor please your guests with a fall colored gel candle. Wrapped delicately in a sheer bag for just that added extra touch.

A little something different for a fall wedding favor is a book mark that is elegantly shaped into a leaf. The leaf is gracefully cut out and will bring guests smiles to their faces when relaxing with a good book when they take a break and think of you two.
